AATCC 147, Antibacterial Activity Assessment of Textile Materials
Test Method(s):
· AATCC 147
Scope: To detect bacteriostatic activity on textile materials
- A loopful of inoculums is transferred to the surface of sterile agar plate in 5 streaks
- Rectangular cut fabric is placed transversely across streaks, to ensure intimate contact with agar surface
- Incubation period of 24 - 48 hours at body temperature
- A clear area of interrupted growth underneath and along the sides of the test material indicate antibacterial activity
Organisms per test method: S. aureus ATCC 6538 and K.pneumoniae ATCC4352. Additional organisms for testing are available upon request.
Parallel Streak works very well for thin woven fabrics. For materials that roll and/or are bulky in construction, the results of these tests are not always conclusive, since the intimate contact with the agar is not possible. In such cases, a quantitative test will give more accurate results.
